  • Car Seat Cover

While this may seem like an unusual article for a web design focused website it involves a bit of creativity in solving a problem I had recently. About two years ago I purchased what I thought was a pretty inexpensive leather computer chair. About 6 months later I realized it was actually “pleather” (PVC). The armrests were the first to go with patches of the pleather peeling off. That was okay, I would just purchase wheelchair armrest covers. Problem solved. About a year later the main seat of the chair began peeling. Large chunks began falling off which not only made the chair look bad but also littered my tiled floor. The chair itself was still good and replacing it with a real leather chair would be expensive and a waste of a good chair.

Searching for the Solution

I searched the internet for solutions to what others have done in similar situations. Solutions ranged from distressing the pleather even further in a retro look to covering with a custom fabric or leather cover. I don’t sew so the latter wasn’t an option and my chair has a somewhat complicated shape to cover up. Finally I sat back and looked at my chair and thought this thing is about the same size as my car seat. Why wouldn’t a car seat cover fit over this.

I happened to be in Halifax at the time so I made a quick trip to Canadian Tire and chose a color and size that matched my chair. I had to be sure to choose one of the larger sizes that accounted for a head rest. For about $30 I have two seat covers and an extension on the life of my computer chair.
